Being a Jewelcrafting Baron  

If 10,000 gold per month just is not enough for you, then you will need to take another approach. If you want to make a lot more gold than this, I recommend what I call the "Jewelcrafting Baron" approach. 

This will involve more time and more money invested, but there is literally no limit to how much gold you can earn with this technique. 

Alchemy & Jewelcrafting Synergy 

I truly believe the easiest way to get massive amounts of gold (i.e. hit the gold cap) is by having your character have both Alchemy and Jewelcrafting leveled up (or perhaps having an alt with Alchemy if you do not like the Alchemy bonuses).

There is a saying in business that if you want to earn $100,000 in a year, you should not be doing $10 an hour work. In World of Warcraft, this is no different. If you want to hit the gold cap, you have no business managing auctions that are going to make you only 5-15 gold in profit. You cannot be wasting your time doing "5 gold" work. 

If you want you want to earn in access of 25,000 gold per month (with little risk) via professions, you have to deal in more profitable auctions. That is of course unless you want to be one of those unfortunate rich players who plays "world of auction house" instead of World of Warcraft! 

What does this have to do with anything? Well, most Jewelcrafters go about it all wrong: 

- They buy ore off the auction house and prospect it. 

- If they only get green gems, they sell the green gems on the auction house just to try to recover some of their gold. 

- They only make gold when they get "lucky" and get blue gems (especially red ones). 

- After prospecting 20 stacks of ore, they consider it a win because they made a few hundred gold. 

However, it does not need to be like that. There is no point in investing all that time and money into all that ore just to make a few hundred gold (or even a thousand). If you are not making at least 500 gold profit per hour spent Jewelcrafting, you might as well be farming in one of the spots mentioned earlier in the guide. 

Wasted Gold 

When you prospect ore as a Jewelcrafter, the biggest downside is that you end up with tons of green gems that are practically useless. They just are not worth the time to cut and sell. Remember, if you want to be a captain of virtual industry if you will, you cannot waste your time on "5 gold" transactions. 

What happens in Cataclysm is that Jewelcrafters buy ore off the Auction House in order to prospect it. Gold bleeds (i.e. disappears to the server), as Miners pay AH fees when listing their ore.  

Jewelcrafters prospect ore and feel they have no use for green gems (aside from the occasional daily and prism creation) and sell their green gems on the auction house for a slight mark-up. Gold bleeds  paying AH fees in the listing of the green (uncommon, not green colored!) gems. 

Alchemists buy the green gems and transmute them into Shadowspirit Diamonds. They then sell these uncut diamonds on the auction house for a modest mark-up. Gold bleeds as the Alchemists pay listing fees for the Shadowspirit Diamonds. 

Jewelcrafters buy the uncut Shadowspirit Diamonds, cut then, and them relist them for a modest mark-up. Gold bleeds for a fourth time (!) in this process, and the Jewelcrafter makes a modest profit. 

This is insane and is not a profitable situation for the Jewelcrafter. The solution? This is where alchemy comes in, and it takes a barely profitable practice (prospecting ore) and makes it a gold-making powerhouse.
