How to Make Gold by Gathering in WoW
WoW Gold Guide -->
WoW Gathering Guide --> Make Gold by Gathering in WoW (you are here)

If you want to earn some money via gathering, you can. The steps are pretty simple:
Step 1: Buy an epic mount.
Step 2: Install the Gatherer add-on (visit
http://www.gathereraddon.com/ for the install).
Step 3: Start farming in a zone.
Step 4: Profit!
In all
seriousness, as soon as you start to gathering, gatherer will build substantial maps for you that you can use in
order to farm with.
In
reality, most ores and herbs are concentrated in zones according to their level. For example, Copper spawns in
level 1-20 zones, Tin in 20-30, Iron in 30-40, Mythril in 40-50, Thorium in 50-60, so on and so
forth.

Maps
I have
included a variety of maps for low-level herbs and ores which are marked in the level 1-80 guide. These can
still be profitable to gather at the level cap, depending on your server's economy.
If you
see any of the levels 1-80 ores (or bars) going for a lot on your auction house, you should visit some of those
maps.
While I
have provided you a variety of gathering maps to use, I still recommend installing gatherer if you are going to
be a serious gatherer. The maps I have provided are optimal for gathering the maximal amounts of herbs and ores
in the zones they cover.
While
these routes are very effective, sometimes only certain ores / herbs will be valuable, and gatherer can help you
zero in on a certain ore or herb that may be particularly valuable on that particular day on your particular
server.
With
gatherer installed as you follow the routes provided, you can then have it only display the particular type of
herb or ore you are looking for, allowing you to collect it much more efficiently.
An
example of a time when you might want to use this was recently when Sungrass shot up to 5 gold per piece on my
server. By disabling all herbs/ores aside from Sungrass, you could then gather that Sungrass more effectively
and take advantage of that specific price hike.
Herb and Ore Spawn
Locations
There is
a specific pattern that all mining nodes and ore follow: they spawn near enemies. If there are few enemies
around, even if there is a lot of mountainous space (mining) or open space (herbs), the spawns for harvesting
nodes will also be light.
You can
pretty much figure any questing area has 2-3 different spawns in it, so simply by hitting all the quest areas in
a zone, you are likely to grab the majority of the nodes or herbs in that zone.
With
that said, there are some specific areas in the game you should visit for certain ores and herbs, depending on
what you are looking for. Below, I will list specific zones for each type of ore and herb along with maps where
appropriate.
Note
that literally any level of ore can be profitable at certain times - there is no set rule which states you must
the top-level ore. In particular, I have found that if you have an epic mount, Burning Crusade ores (Adamantite
and Khorium in particular) tend to be very valuable!
Why do
these ores stay valuable? Anyone who wants to level a crafting profession needs these raw materials in large
quantities. If you want to level up your new Blacksmith, you are going to need a lot of Fel Iron and Adamantite
Ore to level it up.
Players
that do not have mining leveled up (and even those that do) will find that it is often easier to buy items off
the auction house. The prices for these ore can be quite high to the enterprising player.
Additionally, there is almost no
competition when gathering these mid-level ores, which makes it very easy to farm an entire zone by yourself.
With an epic mount, it can be quite profitable.
For
Herbs, there is a very similar situation. However, thanks to the wonders of Inscription and a few other
oddities, even very low-level herbs are valuable. While Copper Ore or Tin Ore may net you a few gold per stack,
you can easily sell low-level herbs for 10x that!
For
example, at the time of this writing, Peacebloom is going for 10 gold a stack on most servers. Mageroyal (50
herbalism skill) is going for nearly 30 gold! A low level player can easily farm a stack or two of Mageroyal an
hour (even with no mount) and earn a quick 50 gold to buy all their bags.
Prices
on these low level herbs and ores will tank shortly after the release of Cataclysm, due to many players leveling
up Goblins and Worgens and running through the new areas. However, this will not last long as players will be
looking to level up their fledgling character's professions once they get up to the level cap. This will in turn
cause a massive price increase in low level herbs and ores.
