Making Huge Profits with Jewelcrafting
WoW Gold Guide -->
Professions Gold Guide ---> Making Gold With Jewelcrafting (you are here)

Here is how a good business model looks for a serious Jewelcrafter:

If
you are making the meta gems yourself and buying your ore direct, you can cut out 3 separate times where gold is
lost to auction house fees. You also cut up the mark-ups of the various groups that interact in the process and
can easily net a ton of gold in the process.

Transmute
Mastery
You can
make this process even more profitable by making sure your Alchemist is transmute-mastery specced. This gives
you a random chance to produce 2-4 Shadowspirit Diamonds each time you do the transmute. Every free diamond you
get is even more gold!
Trust
me, if you plan on making a lot of Shadowspirit Diamonds (or the next tier when the next expansion comes out),
then you can earn plenty of gold via this technique.
Recipe
Requirements
You need
to do a little bit more than just have Alchemy and Jewelcrafting leveled up - you also need recipes, of all
types. Let us revisit the initial list given for the most profitable gem stats:
· Bold: +Strength (red)
· Delicate: +Agility (red)
· Brilliant: +Intellect (red)
· Smooth: +Crit (yellow)
· Fractured: +Mastery (yellow)
· Quick: +Haste (yellow)
· Stormy: +Spell Pen (blue)
· Sparkling: +Spirit (blue)
· Rigid: +Hit (blue)
However,
when you prospect for gems, you will get all sorts of gems, not just the ones you want. As a result, you will
need profitable recipes (profitable being the key operator here) for
EVERY gem type.
There
are many profitable mixed-stat gems (green, orange, purple). Any gem which mixes any of the 9 stats listed above
has a chance to be profitable. However, I have found these gems to be more profitable than the
rest:
· Inscribed: + Agility and Crit Rating
(orange)
· Potent: + Intellect and Crit Rating
(orange)
· Deadly: +Agility and Crit Rating
(orange)
· Piercing: +Hit and Crit Rating
(green)
· Lightning: +Hit and Haste Rating
(green)
· Sensei's: +Hit and Mastery Rating
(green)
· Glinting: +Hit and Agility
(purple)
· Purified: +Intellect and Spirit
(purple)
· Veiled: +Intellect and Hit Rating
(purple)
Also,
you will need a meta gem recipe (preferably a few), as you will want to cut the meta gems that you transmute.
All of these are profitable, but in particular I have found that Chaotic and Revitalizing gems are huge
sellers:
· Chaotic: +Crit Rating and 3% Crit Damage (most
profitable - all DPS get this)
· Austere: +Stamina and +AC from Armor (bear tanks
get this)
· Efflugent: +Stamina and reduced spell damage (some
tanks get this)
· Eternal: +Stamina and +shield block value (some
tanks get this)
· Revitalizing: +Spirit and 3% crit heal (all healers
get this)
You will
want to get as many of these recipes (both gem and metas) as you can. At a minimum, you should strive for one
recipe of each type. You can find info on where to get recipes on WoWHead (www.wowhead.com).
Gold
Requirements
Also,
you do need a bit of gold to get started here. You will want at least 2,000 gold before embarking on this
method, as you will need the gold to purchase your initial ores. Just remember you can always get your starting
money by doing the lazy approach for a week: buying uncut gems, cutting them for a mark-up, and selling your cut
gems for profits.
Faction Cuts
As a
side note, any gem recipe which requires faction, a monster drop, tokens, or otherwise is not learned by a
trainer tends to fetch more gold than recipes which you can simply click "learn". Keep that in mind when looking
for recipes to cut.
These
tend to be immune from the saturation that occurs as everyone tries to level up Jewelcrafting, as players will
not be crafting these recipes for skill-ups in most situations.
Cutting Gems The Baron Way (i.e. How
to Make a Huge Profits)
Just to
recap, before working on this undertaking, you need the following for the top tier of gems:
·
Fully Leveled
Jewelcrafter and Alchemist (preferably Transmute-specced)
·
1 Profitable recipe for
each of the 6 colored gems and 1 profitable meta gem cut (preferably both Chaotic and Revitalizing
types)
·
2000+
Gold
Once you
have all of these requirements down, it is time to start prospecting ore for gems. Buy dozens (or hundreds) of
stacks of the current top tiers of ore and prospect them for gems.
There is
not much science or math needed as this is almost always profitable when you combine Jewelcrafting and Alchemy.
Most Jewelcrafters have to worry about finding enough blue gems in order to make a profit, since they are not
cashing in on green gems via Alchemy.
The
collective of Jewelcrafters on the server determines gem price, and if gem price ever dips below whatever ore
costs, the Jewelcrafters who do not use Alchemy as well (read: nearly all of them) will be out of luck and
unable to compete.
Nearly
any type of ore will work for this, as green gems are valuable. Most Jewelcrafters do not like to prospect the
lower-level ore (Fel Iron, Cobalt, Obsidium) since it has a higher chance to yield green gems. Since we are
converting our greens into metas, it hardly matters for us.
With
that said, here is the simple process for making it all work:
·
Purchase ore,
preferably directly from a miner in trade chat, but the Auction House works too.
·
Prospect ore into
gems.
·
Check the AH for
current prices on valuable cuts. Look up each gem type on the Auction House and note whichever cut is selling
for the most total gold.
·
Cut your blue gems into
the cuts currently fetching the highest price and list them on the AH.
·
Transmute your green
gems into Meta gems.
·
Cut your Metas into
Chaotic or Revitalizing Meta gems and list them on the auction house.
·
Repeat this process as
often as you can.
It works
best if you purchase about 100 stacks of ore total before evaluating profitability. If you only buy 10 stacks of
ore, you can get 'unlucky' and not get enough greens for a meta or not get any of the valuable blue gem
types.
Having a
2,000+ gold starting base here gives you all the room you need to make this work. Investing into 100 stacks of
Elementium Ore is likely to yield:
~ 500
green gems. Dividing this by 18 yields enough raw materials for 27 Meta gem transmutes. With transmute spec,
this is likely to be 30-35, depending on how lucky you get.
~ 80
blue gems. You can expect to get about 13 of each gem type.
With 30
Meta gems and 13 of each type of blue gem, it is hard not to make a profit when prospecting, as nearly every
other competitor is buying uncut metas on the AH instead of making them directly.
That is
all there is to it really. The more recipes you have, the better. Buy stacks of ore, prospect them, and cut the
blues into whatever is the most profitable at the moment. Turn your greens into metas, and cut those as well.
Do this
and your profit potential is unlimited, especially if you have your hands in every type of cut, which is
something I want to touch on below:
