Alchemy without Jewelcrafting  

Alchemy is still a great profession even if you do not have Jewelcrafting to go along with it. 

A transmute-mastery specced Alchemist is the perfect complementary pair to Jewelcrafting. I do not recommend Transmute Mastery without Jewelcrafting. However, there are still two other Alchemy specs that are stand-alone: Elixir and Potion spec.  

On the Topic of Specs 

If you are unaware, Alchemists can pick one of three specializations: Transmute, Elixir, or Potion mastery. Whatever your spec is, you have a random chance to create extra items when crafting.

In other words, a transmute-specced Alchemist will sometimes make 2-4 Truegold Bars when transmuting instead of just one. An Elixir-specced Alchemist will sometimes make 2-4 flasks and elixirs, and a Potion-specced Alchemist will occasionally produce 2-4 potions. 

The point is that these extra items are free - there is no additional reagent cost. You can then turn around and sell these free items for 100% profit. Mastery allows an alchemist to break even on crafts and only make money on procs and still come out ahead. 

The downside to this is that if you are an elixir-specced alchemist and are trying to sell potions, you will be competing against crafters who are occasionally making free potions. These crafters can then undercut you on potions and still make more gold than you from potions.  

For this reason, I hate trying to make gold by crafting items outside of your spec. While you can make gold doing this, it is much easier to stick to your spec, as you will end up making a lot more gold.  

As a quick side note, transmute-specced Alchemists can make gold by buying green gems and turning them into metas (even non-transmute specced Alchemists can!) but is just not as profitable as prospecting the green gems yourself. Just because you can make gold doing something does not mean its optimal. 

With that said, below I will offer some strategies for making gold for both elixir-spec and potion-spec Alchemists.
