World of Warcraft Hunter Guide

Click here to get WoW CrusherIn World of Warcraft, the Hunter is a ranged, physical DPS pet class. In other words, this class deals mostly physical damage (the damage mitigated by armor) by shooting arrows and bullets.

The Hunter are built around having a pet to assist them in combat. In this World of Warcraft Hunter guide, I will discuss Hunter specs, pets, gear choices, and even offer up some great PvP tips.

Hunter Basics

Hunters use mana for to use their special abilities, while their pets use Focus (somewhat like a Warrior's Rage). Since Hunters have a fairly powerful autoshot and their pets deal damage, they still do pretty significant damage even when they are out of mana. They also have a variety of talents that help them regenerate mana.

There are three Hunter specs: Beast Mastery, Marksmanship, and Survival. Beast Mastery is generally the best solo-play spec for a Hunter. It is great for leveling up and also has some use in DPS heavy PvP teams.

Marksman is the standard raiding and PvE spec and tends to deal the most damage. The talents in this tier tend to focus on mana savings, sustainability, and increasing DPS.

Survival is the standard Hunter PvP spec. Explosive Shot (51 pt talent pre-Cataclysm) deals ridiculous amounts of magic damage (ignores armor). Due to the high amounts of damage dealt by explosive shot, a survival Hunter is a desireable and powerful PvP partner.

In the next part of this World of Warcraft Hunter guide, I will be discussing some Hunter gear requirements.

Hunter Gear

Naturally, the most important piece of equipment for the Hunter is his weapon. It makes no difference whether or not you use a gun or a bow. Generally, the higher the DPS, the better the weapon, but slow weapons do deal a little bit more damage than faster ones of similar DPS.

Additionally, you will need 8% hit to reach the hit cap (263 hit rating at 80, more with Cataclysm). This should be your number one focus. Note: Survival Hunters have talents to increase %hit. Be sure to substract this from the 8% hit cap. If you see yourself missing when you use your special (yellow) attacks, you will know you are not at the hit cap.

After hit, all Hunters do very well by adding Agility. This is their best stat. You will also want to grab some armor penetration, depending on the quality of your gear. The more armor penetration you have, the better it gets. The cap at 80 is 1400 armor penetration; if you are getting close to the cap it might be a good idea to add some gems that offer + armor penetration. Otherwise, go for Agility.

For the next part of this World of Warcraft Hunter guide, I will briefly talk about pets.

Hunter Pet

The best Hunter pet for PvE 5-mans and for raiding is the Wolf. It has a buff (Furious Howl) that increases group member's damage. For this reason, the Wolf pet is highly desireable and no other pet comes close to it in terms of damage.

The best Hunter PvP pet used to be the Scorpid, hands-down, no contest. Because of this, Blizzard decided to nerf the Scorpids ability. These days, there does not seem to be one pet that is particularly the "best" Hunter PvP pet.

Players can choose between the Core Hound, which slows caster speed (good for Beast Mastery hunters on blow-up teams). Alternatively, for Survival and Marks Hunters, the Crab and Spider both are able to root the enemy for 4 seconds. This is great for trapping someone out in the open and blowing them up.

In the next part of this World of Warcraft Hunter guide, I will be discussing the best Hunter PvP strategies you can use to start winning more Arena games right away. These strategies also work quite well in battlegrounds (though the environment there is less controlled).

Hunter PvP Tips

  • Always spec for Aimed Shot (requires 11 points in Marksmanship). This ability applies a 50% healing debuff to the target. It is of utmost importance to keep this debuff active at all times during a PvP match so the target cannot heal up.
  • Use the Crab's pin ability (or Spider's web ability) to keep your enemy out in the open. Smart players will often try to move out of your line of sight (where you cannot shoot them) in order to heal up. When you see an enemy about to out-range you, be sure to pin him with the Crab's so you can cast Aimed Shot on him before he heads around the corner.
  • Even better, use Pin or Web on a Mage that has just blinked. He then will be stuck there while you tear him up with your instant shots!
  • Place your pet on casters that are out of mana. Your pet will keep the enemy in combat and prevent them from using water during an Arena match. This is great for preventing healers from getting too much mana back.
  • Do not place your pet on Shaman for any reason. A good Shaman will use Water Shield if your pet is attacking him or her, which will give the Shaman practically unlimited mana.

By applying these simple PvP tips, you are certain to start winning a lot more arena matches!
