World of Warcraft Mage Guide
In WoW, the Mage is an offensive class that casts spells to deal damage. In this World of Warcraft
Mage Guide, I will be discussing both the basics of the Mage class along with some tips and strategies for
players of any level.
Mage Basics
In addition to traditional spells, the Mage is also the best AoE (Area of Effect) class in game (this means that
Mages are good at killing large quantities of weak monsters). The other major Mage talent is crowd control;
mages have the Polymorph and Frost Nova in addition to various slows. If you ever get in trouble on your
Mage; Frost Nova, then Polymorph, then run!
Mages have three specs to choose from: Frost, Fire, and Arcane. New Mages are generally best suited to the Frost
Tree, as it offers the Mage the most survivability. The trade off for that is lower (but not much) damage;
Fire/Arcane hybrids tend to deal more damage but die more often too. If you are a seasons WoW veteran looking
to power through the levels, Fire may be a good choice.
A key point from this World of Warcraft Mage guide is that any beginner should stick to Frost to start out,
whereas more advanced players can try out different specs.

The most important stat for mages of any level is Spell Hit. This may seem counterintuitive,
but having a Polymorph or Frost Nova miss can be devastating, especially if you are leveling aggressively by taking
on several mobs at once. You can pick up 3% Spell Hit from Precision (Frost Talent), which is another reason why
Frost is the most common Mage leveling build (note that this talent is currently not in the World of Warcraft
Cataclysm builds).
At lower levels, do not worry too much about chasing down gear for Spell Hit (but wear it when you can). The
game from levels 1-60 is tuned around Mages having no Spell Hit (or even +spell damage) at all, because those stats
actually did not exist when World of Warcraft first came out. Caster itemization was very poor at that time and
there was almost no gear for Mages!
After Spell Hit, you want to focus on gear with +Spell Damage. Since Mages can create their own drinks, Mana
Gems, and have Evocate, you should not worry about any gear that offers regeneration or extra mana while leveling
up. Your main focus should be on + Spell Damage gear.
In the next part of the World of Warcraft Mage guide, I will be going over some of the most important Mage
strategies that Mages of any level should follow.
Player vs Player Tips
A poorly played Mage does not do very well in 1v1 combat, but is great in Battleground regardless of skill. Here
are some tips to help you out when you are in 1v1 battles.
- Do not Blink when you are not stunned, unless you know you can safely escape from a Melee class. For
example, if a Warrior gets a charge off on you, and you Blink out of the stun, he will just Intercept and
proceed to destroy you. Instead, Frost Nova the charging Warrior, walk out of his range, and when he
Intercepts, then use Blink.
- Priest, Druids, and Warlocks will always give you trouble. The best strategy you can use is
surprise; play with them and get their HP down to 60-70%. When they are least expecting it, drop any timers you
may have (Cold Snap, Presence of Mind, Arcane Power, Improved Counterspell) so you can finish them off before
they have a chance to react.
- If you ever get in trouble, Polymorph and run away.
In Battleground, just spam AoE spells like Arcane Explosion and Flamestrike. They deal a lot of damage and will
earn you a lot of honor. Of course, if you are playing with a team in Warsong Gulch, polymorphing players and
rooting people chasing your flag carrier might be a bit more effect!
