Alchemy

I think everyone reading this guide should level Alchemy for one primary reason: your transmute timer is worth money and literally takes less than a minute to use.  

Transmuting for Casuals

I love the transmute function. Every single day you can earn 50+ gold in 1 minute.

For example, at the time of this writing, you can buy 3x Forest Emerald for 5 gold a piece, and then transmute them into an Eye of Zul, which sells for 65 gold regularly. This is a quick 50 gold mark-up. 

You can do similar things with other gems; a Scarlet Ruby + Eternal Fire transmutes into a Cardinal Ruby for a similar 50 gold mark-up. When the recipes were first released, they were worth 120+ gold per transmute. If you were Transmute Mastery specced, then you could earn even more with lucky procs.

Now, this is a daily transmute and can literally be performed with 1 click. You can buy up materials for a few weeks worth of enchants, log in for a minute,  

Now, of course this will change in Cataclysm, but there will still be many valuable transmutes for Alchemists. In particular, the Truegold enchant will be worth a good amount of gold I am sure, as well as the transmutes that turn regular gems and herbs into blue-quality gems. 

Prices will vary server to sever, but here are some recipes that will make you some gold: 

Transmute: Truegold - While the ingredients are very expensive, these bars will be in very, very high demand come Cataclysm release. This timer will be worth a lot of gold (perhaps 100 or more if you buy the materials and then craft it yourself). 

Transmute: Infero Ruby: Turns 3x Carnelian + 3x Heartblossom into an Inferno Ruby. Easy gold.

Really, any of the blue gem enchants will make gold, though I suspect on the vast majority of servers the Inferno Ruby transmute will be the most valuable, followed by Ember Topaz and Amberjewel.

Transmuting for Serious Players

You can also transmute the Cataclysm-level meta gems in order to make some good gold, but you do have to scale the operation significantly in order to turn a profit. 

For example, you can buy out all cheap green-level gems and then transmute Shadowspirit Diamonds. You will only earn a few gold on each regular transmute, but transmute mastery procs are all profit. 

Since there is some risk involved in buying up a lot of green gems and then hoping your metas will sell, casual players can feel free to stay away from this and just rely on their transmute timers to make gold.
