Strategy #1: Buy low, sell normal.

Buying items for a low price and then reselling them for a higher price is nothing new, but whenever a new expansion comes out, this technique is incredibly profitable. No data has been collected yet so players cannot use auctioneer add-ons to think for them. It all comes down to intuition.

Fortunately, it is very easy to pick the right items. Any rare (blue) or epic (purple) item that is an upgrade for players has a very inflated value when an expansion first comes out. Look for weapons with better stats and dps then quest rewards and level 80 epics. These will be valuable.

For example, when Burning Crusade first came out, Ced's Carver was selling for 500 gold for the first month. Before the release of WoTLK it became a 20g dagger. Before you go snatching everything in sight up, here are a few things to consider.

Avoid crafted blues like the plague. Nothing that can be crafted is rare: every crafter working to push his skills to the new skill cap will be turning out 100s of these items.

Do not overpay yourself for blues. Try to get great weapons for under 400g and don't pay more than 200g for good item slot rares.

Do not buy anything that does not excite you. In the first few weeks of a new expansion, players are not looking for a +4 spell damage upgrade in their Glove slot. They are looking for new weapons and major upgrades.

Buy any and all good trinkets. Trinkets are the hardest item to replace in WoW and a lot of the effects are pretty cool. You can list trinkets for large amounts of gold. I sold a Tears of Bitter Anguish for 4000 gold when WoTLK came out. Players have even more gold now and if there are great BoE epic trinkets around, I can see them going for 6000 gold or more.

2. Sell materials, avoid crafting

Crafting is not profitable in the first few weeks or even months after an expansion comes out because everyone is trying to level up their skills. Profit off this situation and level a gathering progession. New ores, herbs, and enchanting materials will be worth a killing (ore much more so than herbs).

Within a few months, prices will normalize and you can then level up your craft of choice. Crafting is not going to make anyone a killing (save maybe the 1 person on the server at the bleeding edge), so I cannot recommend trying to craft in this WoW Cataclysm gold guide.

3. Hoard your Volatile elemental fragments until there becomes a market for them.

There will be a surplus of the new Volatile elemental fragments (level 85 version of primals, eternals, etc). Hold on to these until players get the recipes to use them. The price should rise within a few months of expansion release.

If you see any of the new Volatile fragments (Fire, Air, or Life) on the AH for under 50 silver a piece, buy it. The price will not stay low for long!
