Engineering

Unfortunately, Engineering is the least profitable profession for making gold in Cataclysm. The problem with Engineering is that almost everything they create is Bind on Pickup, leaving them with very little to actually sell.

To make matters worse, the ability to harvest new elemental material has been removed. There are no extractions that allow Engineers to harvest new elemental material (i.e. you can't "extract" volatile elementals, except for air via mining, which is covered below).

With that said, here are the few reliable ways to make gold with Engineering.

High-Level Gathering

Instead of extractors, engineers can create an Electrostatic Condenser, which gives the Engineer a chance to find Volatile Air when mining, skinning, or gathering herbs (i.e. Cataclysm level monsters, nodes and herbs).

There is no other way to get Volatile air aside from farming it, and that can be very painful. As a result, Volatile Air is a great way for players to earn some extra gold by harvesting.

The thing about Engineering is that many players who are engineers are doing it because they want to use the Engineering perks in PvP. Gathering professions do not get as good as perks for PvP (not as customizable as Blacksmithing and Jewelcrafting), and as a result not many players have a combination of Engineering and a gathering profession. This can lead to a lot of gold for someone that likes to gather.

Companions

Non-combat pets, also known as Companions, are probably the easiest ways for Engineers to make money. A lot of players like to collect these and some will pay ridiculous amounts of gold for them, partially thanks to the achievements system (some achievements require players to collect companions).

Since it is such an obscure market for to most of the player base, very few people realize that they can actually make money by selling pets, let alone are engineers and have taken the time to collect the recipes. With that said, here are the valuable non-combat pets you can make as an Engineer, as well as the average price for these pets according to WoWHead (at the time of writing):

·         Lifelike Mechanical Toad: 363 gold (recipe is a random world drop)

·         Lil' Smoky - 146 gold (recipe is a BoP drop off Gnomeregan trash)

·         Pet Bombling - 153 gold (recipe is a BoP drop off Mekgineer Thermaplugg (Gnomeregan boss)

·         Tranquil Mechanical Yeti - 197 gold (recipe is from a Winterspring quest)

·         Personal World Destroyer (new)

·         De-Weaponized Mechanical Companion (new)

As you can see, there are 4 pets which are worth approximately 150 gold or more, and all of them have fairly cheap requirements. Two of the recipes you can farm yourself in Gnomeregan and one is from a Winterspring quest.

You have to buy the toad recipe off the AH (rare random world drop), but other than that, this little niche market is an easy way to make 100+ gold profit off of each pet sale, as the materials cost almost no gold. Easy money.

The two new pets, Personal World Destroyer and De-Weaponized Mechanical Companion are also likely to bring in a decent profit, although those particular items will be on more player's radar. Most players never pay attention to the low-level pets and as a result the price has risen quite a bit.

BoE Gun: Kickback 5000

This rare gun has great stats. With 75 agility, 143 stamina, and an open red socket, this item will be the best easily-earned tanking (and even Hunter DPS) weapon in the game.

BoE Bow: Overpowered Chicken Splitter

At the time of this writing, the stats are a bit off, but I am assuming this will be buffed by the time Cataclysm comes out. Any BoE epic weapon will be a hot seller, particularly if its stats get bumped up to an epic level.

Hunters of all sorts will be looking to buy this thing, and BoE epic weapons often sell for 2000+ gold whenever a new expansion comes out. Just make sure the market is not flooded with them in the mean time.

Engineering Conclusion

While Engineering is not my favorite way to earn gold in World of Warcraft, it can be profitable. The easiest ways by far to make gold are by crafting non-combat pets, which you can sell on the auction house for huge mark-ups.

Also, if you plan on mining, skinning, or herbing with only the intention of making gold, you might as well pick up Engineering as well to collect Volatile Air and increase your profits.
