Making Gold Before 85
In this
section, I will be giving you some specific strategies you can use to make gold all the gold that you need to
level up quickly and easily, without ever having to worry about saving for skills and training. Also, I will be
going over how to set yourself up to make plenty of gold when you reach end-game (i.e. level 85).

The
truth is that when you are leveling up, you do not really need to spend much gold. Buying things on the auction
house is primarily a waste of time, as questing provides you with pretty much everything you need in order to
level up quickly and hassle-free.
This is
especially true with the re-working of starting quest zones and the lowering of mount costs, and the increasing
of mount movement speeds.
With
that said, you will want to be able to pick up bags and perhaps a decent weapon every 10 levels, as well as the
310% mount flying training (which costs 4,000-5,000 gold, depending on reputation) when you hit level 70, and
most importantly, you want to be able to set yourself up for leveling professions once you do finally hit
85.
However,
aside from bags, weapons (and depending on your class you may actually get most of these from questing), and
mount training, you want to save as much gold as you can (and materials) to get epic mount training and to be
able to level up your professions once you do finally make it to 85.
Setting Yourself Up For
85
The main
thing you really want to save up gold (and supplies) is so that you can hit the max level on your professions
once you are level 85. Given that professions are the easiest ways to make gold, and I have provided ample ways
for players of all professions to profit off of them, it only makes sense to hit level 525 on 2
professions.
Rather
than slowly trying to level up your professions as you level your character to 85, I recommend picking up
Herbalism and Mining. Herbalism especially will pay for everything
your character needs, and keeping it leveled can even earn you the thousands of gold you need for epic mount
training.
What I
recommend to do is to Herbalism leveled up and sell the herbs you do not need on the auction house. Unless you
are already level 85, aside from playing the auction house (see our auction house guide) there is not a more
profitable way to level up than by gathering.
Professions to Level
Up
Ideally,
as mentioned in the professions guide, I think that an Alchemy and Jewelcrafting combo is by far the best way to
make gold in WoW.
What I
recommend doing is leveling up both Alchemy and Mining on your low level character (or alt) as you level up
in-game. Then, save all the herbs and ore that you will need to level up your professions.
For
example, you will need approximately 20 Mageroyal to level up Alchemy (1 stack). When leveling up herbalism as
you level your character, make sure you get 1 stack of Mageroyal then stash it away in your bank.
You can
then sell any extras that you do not need on the auction house for profit. Given that the WoWHead median for
Mageroyal is about 1.5 gold each at this current time, and you are likely to get ~60 Mageroyal just from
leveling Herbalism, you can sell your surplus 40 Mageroyal for 60 gold on the auction house.
Given
that Mageroyal is found in level 10-20 zones, this is a ton of gold for a player this level, way more than you
can get from quests or farming.
It is
this reason that any low level player should drop their professions and pick up herbalism to level with. I
recommend picking up mining too: you can use mining to save materials in order to level up Jewelcrafting once
you hit level 85. Jewelcrafting is the most profitable profession and can earn you plenty of
gold.
As far
as farming goes, there is some profitable old-world mobs to farm, as mentioned in the farming guide. However,
given that level 85 players will be farming these on epic flying mounts, it is not nearly as profitable for a
low level player to farm these mobs.
Once you
hit level 40, there are some monster you can farm for gold. However, nothing compares to Herbalism. If you are
already near the level cap and have a flying mount, I would not worry about it and instead focus on trying to
level up one of the profitable professions.
If you
are a low level player and think you are short on gold, as soon as you get your flying mount, go back and level
up herbalism and/or mining. You will be able to casually pick up a lot of nodes and herbs as you quest and level
on the way to 85 and make plenty of gold in the process. You can then use that money to level up your
professions and really start to cash in.
Below, you will find a level-by-level farming guide for herbs, ore, and monsters that you can gather as you focus
on as you are leveling up.
