Prospecting Ore with Alchemy  

Alchemy provides the perfect outlet for all those green gems. It turns out that the Shadowspirit Diamond requires 3x of each green gem:

At this point, it becomes very apparent how profitable it can be to have both Alchemy and Jewelcrafting. If you never have to sell your green gems from prospecting at a loss, and you never have to pay an alchemist for Shadowspirit Diamonds, you can make so much gold by prospecting ore it is not even funny. 

If you prospect your own ore in large quantities (which you should do once you get enough recipes), you can usually buy from miners (who might even be farmers, but who cares, they're making you gold in this instance) direct for a few gold less than the AH price.

Advertise in trade chat that you are looking to buy "ore in bulk". Usually you can find someone who will sell you ore at 2-4g less than the market price if you buy 10+ stacks at once.  

First of all, miners know that by listing ore on the AH they are spending 1-3 gold that they will never get back with each stack they sell. They also want money right away, so if you are paying them directly they are much more likely to sell at a discount.  

It is not even the discount that matters really (remember rich players do not bend over backwards for transactions worth less than 5 gold) but rather the direct supply line itself. If you are ruling jewelcrafting on your server (you can if you prospect yourself), then you need tons of ore and oftentimes it just is not available on the auction house. 

You can easily burn through 50+ stacks of ore in a single day, and the auction house cannot always support that kind of traffic. Plus, if you keep buying ore the second it goes up, you will drive the price up and cut into your profit. An over-aggressive Jewelcrafter (JC) can spike the price of ore up by 10 gold or more!  

By finding people to buy from in trade channel and you can usually get people to farm for you. If someone likes to mine, has a good route, and knows they have a buyer, they will often go farm you stacks of ore that they would not otherwise farm. 

In other words, some farmers will farm monsters instead of ore if they do not have a buyer, but if they know they can sell it to you right away, they will opt for the ore. Keep advertising in trade channel that you are buying ore in bulk and you will find a supplier eventually.
