Tailoring
Thanks
to the Dreamcloth recipe, Tailors will have some very, very easy ways to make gold in Cataclysm. You can make
several hundred gold per day profit simply by creating Dreamcloth. You can create 5 Dreamcloth (cheaply) once a
week, and you can then convert these recipes into a lot of valuable items.
The key
to maximizing your profits off of Dreamcloth is to evaluate which recipe will currently give you the most money
per Dreamcloth required. There are a lot of different recipes with the potential to be valuable but require
varying amounts of Dreamcloth. Here is a list:
·
Powerful Ghostly Spellthread
(1x dreamcloth)
·
Powerful Enchanted
Spellthread (1x dreamcloth)
·
Flame-Ascended Pantaloons (6x
dreamcloth)
·
Dreamless Belt (4x
dreamcloth)
·
Breaches of Mended Nightmares
(6x dreamcloth)
·
Belt of the Depths (4x
dreamcloth)
·
Illusionary Bag (8x
dreamcloth)

Now, all
of these recipes have the potential to be profitable. In order to maximize your profits, however, you need to
check your Auction House and figure out which recipe is going to pay the most gold per dreamcloth
used.
In other
words, the Spellthreads will set the going rate for dreamcloth (likely as much as 500 gold around release, and
this will come down over time very rapidly as the materials get cheaper).
If
Spellthread is currently going for 300g on your server, then in order to make the Breeches of Mended Nightmares
a profitable craft, you need to be able to sell them for more than 1,800 gold (6 dreamcloth * 300 gold a
piece).
Additionally, the Illusionary Bag is
capped at 3,000 gold value, as the Haris Pilton character in Shattrath City sells a 24 slot bag for 3,000 gold.
As a result, if Dreamcloth is worth more than 375 gold, you cannot craft this recipe.
However,
if Dreamcloth is worth less than 350 gold at any given time, you can craft the bag and earn a profit (it will
sell for 2500 gold until more people start making them). If you are the only one selling it, do not get
discouraged if it does not sell for 2,500 gold - relist it at the same price as it is likely there was just not
any buyers looking for it at the time.
What to Make With
Dreamcloth
Early
around Cataclysm's release, you are best off trying to make some of the BoE epic pants. In particular,
Flame-Ascended Pantaloons, as I have always found that DPS-oriented gear sells better than healing gear,
especially BoE pieces. Very few casual players (the type who buy BoE epics) play healers. Also, there are plenty
of healers who like to pick up DPS gear for their off spec, and often do so through BoE epics.
Later in
Cataclysm, I suspect that Spellthreads and Illusion Bags will be the easiest ways to make gold. The Spellthreads
will be in high demand each Tailor can only make a few each week. Illusion Bags will also always be valuable, at
least until the next expansion rolls around.
Other Profitable Recipes: PvP
Gear
As with
many other professions, the pieces of the blue PvP gear that are 525 in skill are good for making money with.
Here is a list:
·
Emberfire Cowl
·
Emberfire Pants
·
Emberfire Robe
·
Fireweave Robe
·
Fireweave Pants
·
Fireweave Cowl
In
particular though, the Fireweave pieces tend to sell for more gold and sell more frequently than the Emberfire
pieces, given that the Fireweave set is more "DPS" oriented and things like spirit are not highly prized in
PvP.
As a
result, I would recommend focusing on the three Fireweave pieces mentioned above. These pieces have very low
material requirements and are actually pretty good for someone just entering PvP. You can easily craft these
with little investment and turn a solid profit on each piece (50g+).
Bags
The
other great way for Tailors to make money is by crafting bags. As mentioned earlier, the Illusionary Bag is
worthwhile if prices of Dreamcloth fall, but the following three bags can also make players a nice amount of
gold:
·
Embersilk Bag
·
Otherwordly Bag
·
Hyjal Expeditionary
Bag
The
Embersilk Bag is likely to have high competition and players can only expect to earn 10-15g on each one, but
dozens of these will sell each day on every server. If you ever see less than 10 of these up, craft a bunch and
list them up.
The
Otherwordly Bag and Hyjal Expeditionary Bag should be done on a case-by-case basis. Scan the auction house for
the current price, then check out the materials and quickly calculate if it is profitable or not. These do not
sell nearly as quickly, so be careful not to jump into the market if there are already 10+ for sale on the
Auction House.
Conclusion
Tailors
can make 500+ gold per day just by following this simple plan:
·
Check the price of Dreamcloth
(i.e. current price of Spellthreads) and complete all of your timed conversions that are profitable once per
week.
·
Turn the Dreamcloth into
Spellthreads or Bags, depending on cost.
·
Craft the 525 skill blue PvP
set and list on the auction house for a 50g mark-up whenever possible.
·
Keep the auction house
stocked with 22-slot bags, enchanting bags, and herbalism bags whenever the supplies dwindle.
